He scored in the 66th minute, Barcola doubled the lead off the bench, Senegal pulled one back in stoppage time, and then Mbappé responded with a long-range screamer one minute later to seal it.

That goal was his 58th for France. He's now the all-time leading scorer in French football history, passing Giroud.

Lionel Messi, age 38, scored his first-ever World Cup hat trick.

17th minute: opens the scoring with clinical finishing.

60': Messi taps in a rebound off a Luca Zidane save to double the lead.

76': Messi curls a left-footer into the far corner.

That hat trick moved Messi to 16 World Cup goals — level with Miroslav Klose for the all-time record. He has more games to play. Austria is next.

One side note worth knowing: the goalkeeper beaten three times was Luca Zidane — son of Zinedine Zidane. Football writes its own stories.
