Breel Embolo couldn't even get on the plane last week — blocked at boarding due to a US visa issue tied to a 2018 criminal conviction. Emergency paperwork. Last-minute clearance. He made it.

17' — Embolo stepped up to the spot and drilled it into the top-left corner. Switzerland dominated possession and created chance after chance for most of the afternoon.

Then came the 94th minute.

Boualem Khoukhi rose at the back post and headed past Gregor Kobel. Qatar — the host nation — earned their first ever World Cup point. Their players dropped to the ground in celebration. The stands lit up.

Switzerland did not see that coming.

🇧🇷 Brazil 1-1 Morocco | Group C | MetLife Stadium

Morocco went ahead first. Lucas Paquetá lost the ball in midfield, it bounced kindly to Noussair Mazraoui, and Ismael Saibari finished coolly past Alisson in the 21st minute.

Brazil — ranked sixth in the world, playing their first game under new coach Carlo Ancelotti — looked shaken.

Then Vinicius happened.

32' — Vini exchanged passes with Bruno Guimarães on the left, created a yard of space for himself, and rifled a right-footed shot into the far corner. 1-1. Just him doing what he does.

That's where it ended. Five-time champions. Neymar still recovering on the bench. Ancelotti still searching for his answer.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scotland 1-0 Haiti | Group C | Boston

Scotland's last World Cup: France 1998. Their last World Cup win: Italia 1990.

Thirty-six years of waiting ended in the 29th minute.

John McGinn collected the ball, composed himself, and finished cleanly past the keeper. The Tartan Army in the stands didn't know whether to scream or cry. Haiti pushed for an equaliser and created chances — Scotland held firm.

Three points. History. The Tartan Army are not just here to make up the numbers.

🇦🇺 Australia 2-0 Turkey | Group D | Vancouver

Turkey captain Hakan Calhanoglu said the day before the match that his side had "more qualities and a more talented team."

27' — Nestory Irankunda received a chipped through-ball, held off three defenders, and sent the Turkish keeper the wrong way with a low, clinical finish.

He is 20 years old. Born in Tanzania to a Burundian refugee family. Arrived in Australia at three months old. Now the youngest goalscorer in Socceroos World Cup history. He celebrated by punching the corner flag — a tribute to Australian legend Tim Cahill.

Connor Metcalfe doubled the lead in the second half. Turkey, returning to the World Cup for the first time in 24 years, were kept completely scoreless.

"It was extra motivation," Irankunda said. "People underestimate us."

📅 JUNE 14 — SUNDAY

🇩🇪 Germany 7-1 Curaçao | Group E | Houston

Curaçao — the smallest nation ever to qualify for a World Cup — had an answer for Germany's opener.

6' Nmecha put Germany in front. Curaçao didn't blink.

21' — Livano Comenencia. A left-footed shot through traffic, straight past Manuel Neuer. 1-1. Curaçao's first ever World Cup goal. Their fans lost their minds.

Then Germany turned the lights off.

38' Schlotterbeck header. 45+' Havertz penalty. 47' Musiala. 68' Nathaniel Brown — a 22-year-old with an American father who chose to represent the country that raised him. 78' Undav. 88' Havertz again. Final score: 7-1.

Coach Nagelsmann: "We really needed this convincing win. We needed this self-confidence."

Seven goals. The ghost of 2014 is back.

🇨🇮 Ivory Coast 1-0 Ecuador | Group E | Philadelphia

For 89 minutes, Ecuador held on.

Then substitute Amad Diallo received the ball inside the box and stabbed it home. 90'. Pure chaos. Ivory Coast — who hadn't conceded a single goal in all of African qualifying — had their winner at the last possible moment.

The Elephants top Group E alongside Germany after matchday one.

🇸🇪 Sweden 5-1 Tunisia | Group F | Monterrey

Yasin Ayari had a choice. Born in Sweden to a Tunisian father and Moroccan mother, he could have represented the team on the other side of the pitch tonight.

He chose Sweden. And then he scored against Tunisia. Twice.

7' — Ayari opened the scoring with a sweetly struck finish. Sweden in control from the jump.

30' — Alexander Isak doubled the lead. Tunisia were barely in it.

43' — Tunisia pulled one back. Omar Rekik headed home from a Hannibal Mejbri cross. Suddenly there was a game.

There wasn't really.

60' — Isak robbed a Tunisia defender, slipped it through to Gyokeres. One-on-one, no hesitation. 3-1.

86' — Substitute Mattias Svanberg swept home from a free-kick within 18 seconds of coming on. VAR spent five minutes confirming it. It stood.

90+6' — Ayari again. A rasping right-footed drive from the edge of the box into the side-netting. Sweden 5, Tunisia 1.

The Brighton man, who could have worn a Tunisian shirt tonight, bookended the scoreline. Football does this sometimes.

Coach Graham Potter: cool, calm, and Sweden are top of Group F.

🇳🇱 Netherlands 2-2 Japan | Group F | Dallas

The first half was quiet. The second half had four goals in 38 minutes.

50' — Van Dijk rose at the far post and headed the Netherlands in front. Classic Van Dijk.

57' — Keito Nakamura turned inside the box and rifled an equaliser past Verbruggen. Japan level.

64' — Summerville restored the Dutch lead. Three goals, fourteen minutes. The crowd at AT&T Stadium couldn't breathe.

Then the 88th minute.

Koki Ogawa whipped in a corner. Daichi Kamada got ahead of his marker and headed it toward goal. Verbruggen got his hands on it — but couldn't keep it out.

2-2. Japan's latest ever goal in World Cup history. Their fans absolutely lost it.

Japan coach Moriyasu: "Our players managed to be tenacious, but at the same time patient."

The Samurai Blue are not here to make up the numbers.
