The Backrooms started as a 2019 creepypasta — an anonymous 4chan post with a single image: an endless, empty room covered in yellow-green carpet, humming fluorescent lights above, the kind of place that feels like it exists just slightly outside of reality.

The idea spread. It became one of the most extensively developed pieces of internet horror mythology in recent memory — thousands of community-written "levels," creature encounters, survival guides, and lore documents. Parsons started making short films about it in 2021. His videos racked up tens of millions of views. Then A24 came to him.
